I had been anxiously waiting, and it was finally official - the first set of tour dates had been announced. Since I was going to school in Calgary, AB and planned on staying, I was hoping to see it on the list. No such luck. I was going to have to settle for Vancouver, BC - which is a 13 hour drive from Calgary. My mom - always the voice of reason - thought I should wait. She was sure when they announced a second set of dates that Calgary would be on the list. If it was announced before the pre-sale for Vancouver, I was willing to wait. It wasn't, so I bought tickets for the first Vancouver concert.
I had become a member of the Backstreet Boys fanclub to take part in the pre-sales. I don't know what took me so long to discover the fanclub, but once I did I was introduced to a whole new world! I had no idea such things as Gold or Silver VIPs existed. I always saw the passes at concerts, and I would tell my sister that we needed to figure out what they were and how to get them. Turns out it wasn't that tough!
As a new member to the fanclub, I was under the impression that during the pre-sale there would be some great (if not, amazing) seats available. Boy, was I wrong! I had set up two laptops, I had the timing down to a matter of seconds - I was ready. And I wound up disappointed. I don't understand the logic of pre-sales. If I go through the trouble of paying for a membership and purchasing tickets the moment they go on sale, should I not get the best tickets possible? Afterall, it does state best available. I am not buying it.
After a disappointing pre-sale, I sweet-talked my mother and father into purchasing Gold VIPs as a Christmas gift for my sister and I. My sister is not a diehard Backstreet fanatic like myself, but she wasn't about to turn down a chance to meet the boys.
After a month or so, a second set of tour dates was released. Sure enough, Calgary, AB was on the list. Since I was living in the city, it would be a true sin not to attend the concert. I decided to buy a second set of tickets. Not through pre-sale, however. I tried my luck with ticketmaster.ca, which didn't fare well either. But I had tickets, that's all that mattered to me!
There was a second Vancouver, BC date added to the tour. Out of curiosity I checked what type of tickets were available, and to my surprise I pulled up floor seats! I ran the idea by my sister - who jumped at the idea to experience it from the floor - and we purchased our third set of tickets. By that time, I had moved back to Revelstoke, BC which had put a bit of kink in my original plan, but I was going to make it work. And we did!

Backstreet girl becomes a New Kid.
Before I chronicle the madness that was my summer of NKOTBSB concerts, I'd like to clear the air. I had not seen the New Kids in concert, nor did I listen to their music. I am not, or should I say was not a New Kids on the Block fan pre-2011. They were before my time. I had the Backstreet Boys, there wasn't room in my life for anyone else. I am, however, a Wahlberg fan - Mark or Donnie, they both do it for me!
Since the two bands would be sharing equal stage time I figured it was in my best interest to do some research. I tracked down a setlist from the first few NKOTBSB shows, and began downloading. I wanted to be familiar with what was being performed. I liked what I was hearing! The older stuff was a bit difficult to listen to at times, but I was enjoying their newer songs. If Dirty Dancing or Summertime comes on while we're driving, my sister and I can not be held accountable for our dance actions!
Besides my obvious attraction to Donnie, I had picked another favorite - Johnathon. He was adorable! I had stumbled upon his interview with Oprah, and I was moved to tears with what he has had to deal with and overcome as an individual and as a member of NKOTB.
I had done all I could do to learn the basics in a few months. I was ready for the concert! Or two.. Or three.. By the end of the madness, I was hooked. Those New Kids sure know how to put on a show worth seeing! By the end of the third NKOTBSB concert, my sister and I were singing and swaying right along with the rest of the NKOTB fans.

N-K-O-T-B-S-B, baby!
"It was a monumental moment. I've talked a lot about how there's crowd noise that we've heard our whole career but there's crowd noise that you can actually feel, and when the curtain lifted up you could feel that scream hit you in the chest. It moves you - physically moves, but also emotionally moves you." - Brian Littrell
June 19th, 2010 - Radio City Music Hall New York, NY
An hour into the New Kids on the Block concert, the five members began to serenade the crowd of screaming fans with a 1999 hit that any boy band fan would know. As the New Kids sang an acoustic version of the Backstreet Boy's hit 'I Want It That Way', the curtain the New Kids were sitting in front of fell. Behind the curtain stood the four members of the Backstreet Boys. Radio City Music Hall erupted! This would be the spark that ignited the wild fire known as NKOTBSB.

November 21st, 2010 - The 38th American Music Awards Los Angeles, CA
A lot can happen in four months, just ask the five members of NKOTB and the four members of the Backstreet Boys. After the surprise performance in June, rumours began swirl. Fast forward to November, and the nine members of the newly formed mega-boyband NKOTBSB were set to take the stage at the AMAs. I was curled up on my couch, ready to witness magic. The boys closed out the show in true, spectacular boyband fashion. There was choreography, pyrotechnics and those angelic voices. The performance, only seen on through the screen of my television, made my pulse race and my heart skip a beat. I was ready for whatever these nine men had in store for us!Sunday, 29 January 2012
How did I fall in love with you?
I've made my country obsession quite clear, so now I'd like to address an even larger obsession of mine. An obsession that's been in the making for over fifteen years.. My name is Kristen, and I am addicted to the Backstreet Boys.
It all started when I was an innocent, impressionable seven year old. My mother brought home a cassette tape labelled 'Backstreet Boys'. My poor, naive mother. She never saw it coming. From that moment forward, I have been hooked (and she's been broke). I had all the cassette tapes until an unfortunate car wreck took them from me - don't worry, I forgave my mother. I eventually replaced my collection with CDs, and it grew to DVDs. Now fifteen years later, I am a young adult still enjoying the pure magic of the Backstreet Boys.
I saw my first concert when I was eleven years old. My aunt had just celebrated a birthday, and she wanted to do something different. She decided she would buy everyone else gifts. A nice gesture, right? I had never received concert tickets as a gift. I had never even been to a real concert! The gift my sister and I received were two tickets to the Black & Blue Tour in Vancouver, BC. I was shocked, and thrilled. My aunt had planned it so that she'd be able to take us. She's a school teacher, but the concert was scheduled for the summer months so she'd have the time off. She might have been just as excited as us!
On July 9th, 2001 the tour was postponed in order for AJ to enter a rehab. When the tour resumed towards the end of August, our tour date had been rescheduled. The school year had started, and my aunt was no longer able to take us. She was devastated. To this day, she is still angry with AJ. She jokes about joining us on the next cruise so that she may have a chance to yell at him. Needless to say, I'd keep her far, far away from Mr. McLean!
The first time I saw the boys live was on October 1st, 2001 in Vancouver, BC at General Motors Place. My parents, my sister and I made the seven hour journey. I don't remember the drive down, but I am sure it involved every Backstreet Boy album I owned - as do most roadtrips now. I do remember what took place in the hotel room before the concert. I decided that writing the names of all five boys on my arms and then covering them with stickers was a good idea, as an eleven year old would. We were so close to the arena that my mother, sister and I were able to walk. I can still remember the overwhelming feeling of chaos outside the arena. Once we were in, we took our seats. We had average seats. Probably lower bowl, a few rows up. I don't remember much of the concert. I wouldn't be able to tell what they sang or when they sang it, but I do remember - as clear as day - opening with Everyone. I believe it's the only time I've heard it. I also remember the drop-down catwalk, and telling my mother Brian had waved at me. We were no where near close enough for a wave to take place, but I was certain it happened. I also remember when AJ McLean, resident bad boy as well as my lifelong favorite, emerged from the floor wearing the silky white suit. I'm sure there wasn't a dry eye in the house! Overall, it was an amazing experience and one I am hoping to always remember.
The next time I saw the Backstreet Boys was in 2005. That summer had not been kind. I had lost a friend of mine suddenly, and my father had also suffered a massive heart attack. Luckily, he survived. As a fifteen year old, it was a lot to process.
A friend of mine, an active Backstreet fan, had bought two tickets and asked me to join her. I'll be honest, I had fallen from grace briefly. I wasn't as involved with the boys as I had once been, and I didn't even know they were touring so close to us. But I jumped at the offer to see them in concert! On September 4th, 2005, we drove to Kelowna, BC to see the Never Gone show. We checked into the hotel, relaxed for a few hours and prepared ourselves for the concert. Her mother dropped off a few blocks away from Prospera Place, and we walked the rest of the way. We began to discuss how we'd react at the concert. My friend told me that I didn't have to worry, that she wasn't a screamer. As we approached the venue, we noticed a group of girls forming at the fences near the tour buses. As we got close we heard screaming. That was our cue! We joined the group at the fence, and I noticed that the boys were coming out one by one to sign autographs. I didn't get anything signed, but it was the closest I had ever been - which was good enough for me! Kevin was the first boy we saw, and immediately my friend started screaming. So much for not being a screamer, eh?
Kevin, Howie and Nick came out to say hi. Afterwards, we headed inside to take our seats. I was floored - literally - by our seats. We were four rows from the stage. Unlike the Black & Blue tour, I had a camera this time and was able to capture the magic for myself. (Unfortunately those pictures are on a CD, buried somewhere. Eventually I'll dig them out and post them.) This was the last time I'd see Kevin in concert, and the last time I'd see Nick heavy and very, very sweaty - thank goodness!
A year later, they were back. As soon as the tour was announced, I marked the date on the calendar. I was planning to move to Calgary, AB for school, so we made the trip a family affair to look at apartments as well. We spent all day looking at apartment after apartment, the whole ordeal was exhausting. We got ready for the concert back at our hotel room, and then my sister and I headed to the Saddledome. I bought far too many t-shirts! For some reason, I wasn't sure if I'd have another chance to (or if the boys would tour again). I was quite impressed with our seats. To get better seats, I had purchased seats in different rows. My sister was sitting directly behind me, but when the concert started she wiggled her way next to me. We were in the lower bowl, only a two or three rows from the floor. Shawn Desman opened, and signed autographs afterwards - my sister wouldn't let me go, she was afraid we'd miss something. Then Baylee came out, in all his cuteness, to introduce the boys. My sister and I had an incredible time belting out our favorite songs. My spark for the Backstreet Boys was back, and I was ready for more - much more!

It was quite a few years before I saw the boys again. I missed the Unbreakable tour. Normally I wouldn't make excuses for such foolish behavior, but I had just moved to Calgary, AB. The day of the concert was the same day I was moving into my dorm. I had also slipped, again. I didn't know the boys were intown. I found out late, and had no one to go with. After I got to know my roommate a bit better, I found out she had gone to the conert.. That was a bitter pill to swallow.
Country round-up!
I've been very lucky to cross off quite a few from my Must-See Country Concert list. In this post, I'm going to do my best to sum up each concert I've seen up to this point.
September 18th, 2009 - Keith Urban's Escape Together World Tour (w/ Lady Antebellum)
In September 2009 I moved to Calgary for the second time. I was starting my first year at Mount Royal University. My parents were dropping me off, and during the drive in we heard an advertisement for Keith Urban's concert. My mom encouraged me to go, so I called up a friend and we decided to get tickets. It was my first country concert, but certainly not my last! It was amazing. Lady Antebellum was a fantastic opening act, and Keith Urban is such a show stopper! It's one that I'll never forget.

October 27th, 2009 - Rascal Flatts Unstoppable Tour (w/ Darius Rucker)
My precious mother and father bought me two floor tickets to Rascal Flatts for my birthday, which was conveniently October 28th, 2009. Rascal Flatts was the first country group I fell in love. It was amazing to see them from the floor! They're flashy and entertaining. It was also the first time I saw Darius Rucker live. I hadn't listened to him much before the concert, but afterwards I was hooked!

March 27th, 2010 - Tim McGraw's Southern Voice Tour (w/ The Lost Trailers & Lady Antebellum)
The Lost Trailers opened for Lady Antebellum who opened for Tim McGraw. After The Lost Trailers performed, they signed autographs near the t-shirt stand. I ran up and got myself some autographs! I still have the photo somewhere. It was my second time seeing Lady Antebellum live, and they never disappoint. I'll be honest - this was hands down my favorite concert. Tim McGraw is a country God! He wears that black cowboy hat better than anyone else could, and he can sing. Boy, can he sing! This man can move me to tears with a single song.

July 17th, 2010 - Miranda Lambert & Jason Aldean
This was a lot of fun! For those of you who don't know, my sister is my best friend. The two of us drove down to Calgary, AB for the Stampede and this amazing concert - which we had floor seats for. Miranda and Jason were co-headlining a tour, so they each had equal stage time. Miranda is a beautiful country girl! She is bad-ass and makes it look effortless. I adore her. Jason Aldean is phenomenal! He is so talented, and so incredible live. I can not wait till I get to see him again.

October 5th, 2010 - Brad Paisley's H2O World Tour (w/ Justin Moore & Darius Rucker)
Another three act concert. This one is a close second to the Tim McGraw show. Justin Moore opened for Darius Rucker who opened for Brad Paisley. Before this concert, I had never heard of Justin Moore. After the concert, I can not get enough of this boy! He is a true country boy, and puts on a heck of a show. Darius Rucker impressed me for the second time. For those of you who don't know him, Darius Rucker use to be the lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish. Then Brad Paisley came out and shut the Saddledome down. He's a legend. Brad Paisley puts everything into his shows, and I'd love to see him again.

After recapping the concerts I've seen, I realize I didn't see ONE country concert in 2011. Bizarre! I'll have to make up for it in 2012 - starting with Blake Shelton's Well Lit & Amplified Tour (w/ Dia Frampton & Justin Moore) on March 8th, 2012 in Spokane, WA. Watch for that blog post to come shortly afterwards!
Where do I begin?
I'll start with the basics. My name is Kristen and I am 22 years old. Technically I am a student, but I decided to take a year off. When I am in school, I am studying to get my Bachelor of Kinesiology and ultimately a certificate in athletic therapy. I've accomplished three years of school, but only two in the kinesiology field. Most people write-off their first year, right? I'll be heading to the University of Lethbridge this fall to complete the two-three years I have left. I enjoy school, but like everyone else I do have other interests..
Sports are a passion of mine. I once waited in line for five hours to meet Dion Phaneuf when he played for the Calgary Flames. I'll be honest, it was rather disappointing. He wasn't the warmest individual I've met. I'm still a Flames fan, and Phaneuf now plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs - everything works out in the end. I'll watch any sporting event, but I also enjoy being active. I'm a huge fan of volleyball, basketball, and ultimate Frisbee. I also swam competitively for ten years. It's the relationships, the competitiveness and even the politics that keep me interested in the sporting world.
Two other passions of mine are country music and the Backstreet Boys. I won't get too deep into either because I am sure the majority of blogging will revolve around these two subjects.
Speaking of blogging, I suppose I'll address why I started this blog. I just purchased a new Sony VAIO, and I wanted to put it to good use. So here it is! My first attempt at a blog. Enjoy!
